Choosing the right peanut butter for your recipe
Many of the recipes above will specify things about the peanut butter you're using. They may want unsweetened, unsalted, or natural peanut butter.
Or your regular jar of Jif might be just fine.
If a recipe does call for a specific type of peanut butter, I encourage you to follow those directions. Most recipe creators don't specify something like that without a good reason.
Otherwise, you can feel free to use whatever peanut butter you have on hand in the recipe!
How to store natural peanut butter
For conventional peanut butter, the pantry is your best option. That will keep the texture scoopable/spreadable, and peanut butter is totally fine stored at room temperature.
For natural peanut butters, though, I recommend storing in the fridge. You can store natural PB in the pantry, but hear me out. This is what we do when I buy natural peanut butter:
- Leave the jar on the counter upside-down. This will cause the oil that's pooled at the top to mix with the solids at the bottom.
- Once the oil is mostly incorporated, give it a good stir.
- Store that jar in the fridge. The colder temperature will keep the oil from separating again, so you won't have to stir every single time.
Frequently asked questions
Can vegans eat peanut butter?
Of course! Peanut butter is just ground up peanuts. The only time things get sticky is when you're adding ingredients to peanut butter, like honey or dairy. Vegans do not eat honey or dairy products.
What's the difference between regular and natural peanut butter?
Natural peanut butter contains only peanuts and maybe a little sugar or salt. The natural oils in the peanuts will separate out as natural peanut butter sits. See above for how I store natural peanut butter, so I don't have to stir it every time I use it.
Conventional peanut butter adds oils that are solid at room temperature to prevent separation.
