Veronica Ewers Withdraws from Elite Cycling Ahead of 2026 Season
Racing Update
A mutual decision prioritizes Veronica’s long-term health as she continues her recovery from RED-S.
December 2, 2025
Veronica Ewers has announced she will take a break from professional cycling before the 2026 season begins.
This decision is shared between Veronica and EF Education–Oatly, with a focus on her lasting health and well-being.
Throughout her career, Veronica has been managing RED-S. She paused cycling for an extended period during the 2024 season to support her recovery, then returned to racing under the close supervision of EF’s medical and nutrition staff. They coordinated her training and racing schedule while carefully tracking her symptoms to aid her RED-S recovery.
Veronica has shown remarkable dedication to her recovery, actively working to restore her health while remaining a committed teammate both on and off the bike.
Prior to the team’s 2026 pre-season gathering, bloodwork conducted by her personal nutritionist indicated hormonal values still aligned with RED-S. Consequently, Veronica and the team agreed to part ways under her contract so she can take time away from competition to fully prioritize her healing, free from contractual pressures.
EF Education–Oatly’s medical team, therapists, and dietitians will continue to support her during her time away from racing.
“The team afforded me the chance to recover, but the time hasn’t been enough for my body to heal completely,” Veronica commented. “Now is the moment to put health first; without full healing, peak performance isn’t possible. If a return to top-level competition is ever possible, it will require a fully healed body to compete at the highest standard.”
“I’m grateful to the team for listening and backing my decision to pursue health,” she added.
Esra Tromp, EF Education–Oatly’s general manager, stated, “The health and long-term well-being of our riders always comes first, and that guided this tough choice. Veronica has shown extraordinary courage and commitment, and we’ll continue to support her as she focuses on her health. We hope for Veronica’s full recovery and a healthy return in the near future.”
We extend our best wishes to Veronica as she focuses on recovery.
